Are Yeast Infections Contagious and Transferable?

Are yeast infections contagious to other individuals? This article will explore if yeast infections can be transferred to others. I immediately thought that sexual contact female to male could be the only way to transfer a yeast infection. Boy was I misinformed.

Yeast infections have been a huge source of irritation for women at all stages of life. One of the bonuses of the sexual revolution in the 60’s and 70’s was the freedom to get vaginal infections. No one said that the first generations of birth control pills would give you vaginal infections, vaginal soreness, constant wetness. I was leaking like a faucet and didn’t know why. Turned out the hormones in the birth control pills let the yeast grow wildly. Talk about vaginal soreness. Yikes.

Turns out all these annoying things were true. Get an IUD, forget a tampon, take antibiotics for strep or any other symptom the docs felt would be helped by an antibiotic and start the yeast infection shuffle. That’s all for the women.

Now some cultures do not recommend or practice circumcision for their male children. Uncircumsized males who do not practice careful hygiene can and do get yeast infections. To avoid this the foreskin should be retracted and the penal head regularly, carefully washed with gentle warm soap and water and dried.

The yeast that causes yeast infections likes warm, moist places to grow and if the area around the penal head is not cleaned the yeast will multiple with no help from a partner at all. It would be a very good idea not to sit around in wet swim trunks, or wet underwear. Change quickly after athletic activity. Wearing tight jeans keeps the genital area warm and moist too. Ditch them if yeast infections are a recurring problem.

Wow that was an eye opener. Who would have thought it? Admittedly most US born male infants are circumcised very early in life so it not generally a problem, but for those babies from other parts of the world or whose mother’s just could stand the thought of it – have escaped the knife– that annoying genital itching, moistness, odor may just be a yeast infection you gave to yourself. No partner needed.
